Blood clots are masses of blood formed after an injury to protect from excessive bleeding and the body dissolves the clot once the injury heals.
There are times when clots form within arteries or veins and do not break down on their own ,they stay and can cause pulmonary embolism and stroke.

-pulmonary embolism (PE),a deep vein thrombosis that has broken off the original point and has reached the lungs;
